HOKO-JI
A Buddhist Community near Taos, New Mexico

Hokoji or Phoenix Light Temple is a family practice temple, founded by Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi and students in 1983.
Hokoji sits at 8030 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Taos, below El Salto mountain which Kobun named “Daisho-Zan” or “Great Holy Mountain”. Kobun's calligraphy in the left sidebar, "Dai-sho-Zan-Ho-ko-Ji", translates as "Great Holy Mountain Phoenix Light Temple". The fourth character "Ho" may also be translated as "Dharma".
Hokoji offers monthly day long meditation practice on the Sundays and four annual sesshins and a Buddhist Study Group (please see Schedule).
Each sesshin is led by a teacher (Sensei) who has received transmission in Kobun Roshi’s lineage under Vanja Palmers, of Switzerland, who is Kobun's Dharma Heir. Hakuryu Ian Forsberg is the Resident Teacher. Visiting teachers are Angie Boissevan from Floating Zendo; Mike Newhall from Jikoji; Jean Leyshon; and Vanja Palmers. Bob Watkins and Stan White generously offer wisdom as the need arises.
Kobun, who taught us to "trust ourselves" said "Hokoji belongs to those who use it." Kobun's calligraphy "Hoko-ji- A Buddhist Community" appears in the banner at the top of this page.
